Man, I really hope Slate opens sources all the specs and measurements for 3D printing their stuff!
If they do, the 3D printing community could totally run wild with it. It might finally be the kick I need to start learning Fusion360!

The one thing to be careful of is what filament to use. Regular PLA just isn't going to work if the truck is in the sun at all. Something like ABS may work, but you need an enclosed ventilated printer for that. There is an HT-PLA that just recently launched that I'm planning on testing and seeing how it holds up in a car in summer heat.

Open-sourcing specs sounds great, but companies rarely do it, control equals profit. If Slate hands that over, they lose aftermarket sales. Don't hold your breath; DIY freedom usually threatens corporate wallets first.

You've got a point. If specs are open-sourced, it's true that companies lose some control and possible money. A company like Slate might hold back because this could hurt their sales after the initial purchase and their spot in the market. Giving people the freedom to do it themselves can be bad for business.
